Internet Fixes Feature Articles.
IF01362 MY TIP TO YOU.
Many of the questions I am asked on a weekly basis require the use of the System File Checker. Many of the Folks have no problem using the SFC until they are asked an XP CD to copy files from. The following should take care of that dilemma for you.
Running The System File Checker.
Please start the Command Prompt by Clicking Start and then Run and typing cmd and pressing enter.
When the dos window opens type or copy & paste sfc /scannow and press enter.
Windows will check the presence and versions of all vital files. You will be prompted for the Windows CD if anything needs to be replaced.
Changing the Path To The I386 Folder if no CD is available.
Look on your restore CD’s for you I386 folder and follow the instructions below to fix the pathway problems for running sfc. Sometimes you will find a copy of the I386 Folder already on your C: Drive. In that case all you have to do is change the Pathway.
This is a major folder and should be one of the first you see, now copy this onto your hard drive into the system root. For most of you that is going to be C:\ so you should end up with a folder that looks like: C:\I386
Now you will need to tell your computer you now have the files on your PC. We do this is the registry (type regedit in the Run box on the start menu) by navigating to:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Setup
You will see various entries here on the right hand side. The one you want is called:
SourcePath
It probably has an entry pointing to your CD-ROM drive, and that is why it is asking for the XP CD. All we need to do is change it to:
C:\
Simply double click the SourcePath setting and a new box will pop up allowing you to make the change.
Now restart your computer and try sfc /scannow again!
