Open File Security Warning dialog box not appearing

Postby lorraine » Thu Jun 09, 2011 2:46 pm

Hi Gary,

On an old PC running XP Pro (no longer on our domain but just in a workgroup) I do not get the dialog box warning me about installing a file after I click on the .exe setup the way I do for all other instances of XP computers that I've worked on. I looked it up and saw a suggestion to run gpedit.msc and change the settings there but that didn't work. If I click on an .exe file it just runs the installer without the warning first. Is there another place to look to re-enable the setting? It's possible that long ago someone once cleared the checkbox that says "always ask before opening this file" but I'd like to reset that if that's the reason why the dialog box no longer appears. (I look at this as similar to enabling/disabling UAC in later versions of Windows.)

I know this is a registry edit and as soon as I am sure I have the correct one I will post it. This has SP3 correct?

Yes, it has SP3. It's not a surprise that it might have registry issues even though it was a clean install a couple of years ago. It's a very limited computer running at 256MB RAM (non-upgradeable) so running an AV program that is light on resources also means running not a very good one and it has had several malware attacks that I've been called in to remedy. That's why I just took it out of service when a replacement workstation became available. However, I still want to be sure that if it is used again that the security warning is functioning.

Meanwhile I will try sfc /scannow just in case it will help.

Hello Lorraine,

1. Go to Internet Options either through Control Panel or Internet Explorer and under the Security tab.

Click Custom level and under Launching applications and unsafe files, make sure Prompt is selected.

2. If Prompt is already selected take a look at the following registry key and see what is listed.

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Associations]
“LowRiskFileTypes”=”.exe;.bat;”

Hello Lorraine,

Try this one:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Attachments\SaveZoneInformation
Change SaveZoneInformation to 2.
NOTE:
0 = Not Configured
1 = Enabled
2 = Disabled

Thanks, Gary. I'll give it a try Monday. If it doesn't work for some reason I'll move on. I was hoping to learn about how to handle the issue in case I come across it again on a more critical workstation. I also figured that the topic, since it is security-related, would be of interest to visitors to your board.

Hi Gary,

This whole question may have been a bit of a red herring but it's still a bit puzzling, in my opinion. I did do the SaveZoneInformation change as you suggested but it didn't make a difference in the exe file that I was trying, which was Adobe Flash Player. I then tried it in a limited user account and I didn't get a Windows warning but I got a message in the Adobe installer that I didn't have privileges so that was good. I then tried another exe in that account (CCLeaner) and I got the Windows Open File Security Warning dialog box--good again.

I logged back in as administrator and tried the CCleaner exe and got the Open File Security Warning dialog box but when I initiated the Adobe Flash installer I got no warning. Therefore it seems to be something related to Adobe's Flash installer that can bypass the Windows security settings. In my opinion that is not a good situation to have an installer designed to run, even on an administrator's account, without warning the user first.

What's your take on it? Do you think that Adobe should be able to bypass the Windows settings? (It is the Flash Player version that is not Active X but the other "plain" version.)
