the need for .Net framework?

Postby lorraine » Tue May 22, 2012 4:33 pm

Hi Gary,

What is the best way to determine what applications need the .Net Framework--and which version--uninstalled? We have some older used XP Pro computers that could use the hard drive space by uninstalling one or more .Net versions (the one that I'm looking at now has versions 2.0 and 3.5) but if I go to Add/Remove to uninstall them I get all sorts of warnings about not uninstalling them if something depends on them.

Hello Lorraine,

The following best describes .Net. A framework is just a bunch of code that the programmer can call without having to write it explicitly. Below are a couple links to some good articles.

Thanks, Gary, I read the links and one or two others and see that it's probably best to leave.Net installed and find other ways to manage the small-capacity drives. I have uninstalled any unnecessary applications and did file compression (using advice from here: http://windowssecrets.com/top-story/pre ... long-haul/). The .Net installations became tempting "next uninstall" considerations but I'll now leave them alone.
