This may save some time and aggravation: mark the USB port that you use for your printer. In my case I have found for HP printers that if you disconnect the USB cable (perhaps when doing computer maintenance) and reconnect it in a different USB port the printer wants to install all over again. Once finished it may not even print so if you have a lot of ports and may not remember which one you used by the time you reconnect it mark it first before unplugging it. You'll save yourself a ton of troubleshooting time!
