Performing a successful disk defragmentation

This feature is located at "Start", "Programs", "Accessories", "System tools", "Disk Defragmenter". Please read the paragraph above "performing a successful ScanDisk" prior to using the "defrag" feature.

Follow the instructions on turning off the programs running in the background, emptying the recycle bin and removing the screen saver and background.

Just like the "ScanDisk" feature, all programs running in the background need to be turned off or the defrag will not complete. It can get stuck and have to start over if some kind of change is made to the hard drive during the defragmenter process. A ScanDisk needs to be performed prior to a defrag or you could defragment files that have errors. Use this feature monthly and save time waiting for it to complete. The more fragmented, the longer the defrag.

There are those systems that are so heavily fragmented that this feature will not work.

If yours is one of these, try performing a defrag in "safe mode". See "booting options for Windows 95", or "booting options for Windows 98". NOTE: If you are having trouble getting the defrag to complete even after following the instructions above, ensure that your anti-virus software is turned off and that anti-virus protection is disabled in your BIOS.

See "Entering BIOS".
