Switch To Windows Basic Search Tool In XP!

Learn how to switch from the Windows XP Search Companion to the basic search tool.

As you probably know, the Windows XP Search Companion provides users with a lot of bells and whistles designed to make searching for files on hard drives much easier. But sometimes all of these extra features just get in the way.

If you're longing for Windows 2000's basic search tool, it doesn't have to be in vain. The basic search tool is still available in Windows XP, and you can activate it with a quick registry edit.

Note: Editing the registry is risky, so be sure you have a verified backup before making any changes.

Here's how:
1. Open the Registry Editor (Regedit.exe).
2. Navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\ CurrentVersion\Explorer\CabinetState.
3. Go to Edit | New | String Value.
4. Name the new value Use Search Asst.
5. Double-click the new value, type no in the Value Data text box, and click OK.
6. Close the Registry Editor, and restart the system.

To switch back to the Search Companion, just go back to the Registry Editor, and change the Value Data to yes.

Some Thing New On Thursdays!  The Word On Freeware That I Use Daily And Find It Worth Sharing With You!

Need Free Backup Software? Free being the Key Word!

I use Cobian Backup on a Daily Basis between multiple Computers and a Server and everything the Publisher says is true plus. On a scale of one to five this one gets a Five from me! I have used commercial products and some of them don't have some of the features this one does! Need backup software? This is it!

There is a newer Version 8 that I haven’t tried yet! I am doing a format and re-install on a PC and will load Version 8 then. Look for more information on this software in a future newsletter.

Cobian Backup 7.4.5.348
http://www.educ.umu.se/~cobian/cobianbackup.htm

Publisher's Description:

Cobian Backup is a multi-threaded program you can use to backup your files and directories from their original location to other directories/drives in the same computer or other computer in your network.

2. Click the Advanced tab in the dialog box.
3. Scroll to Security and select the Empty temporary Internet files folder when browser is closed checkbox, and then click Apply.

Now, every time you close your browser, your cached Files are automatically deleted.

To Change The Number Of Lines That You Scroll With The Wheel!

1. Open the Mouse in Control Panel.
2. On the Wheel tab, under Scrolling, click Scroll, and then select the number of lines to scroll with each notch on the wheel.
-or-
Click Scroll one "screen" at a time.

Side Notes:

- To open Mouse, click Start, point to Settings, click Control Panel, and then double-click Mouse.

- A "screen" is different depending on the size of your window and the program you are using. Scrolling one screen at a time is equivalent to using the PAGE UP or PAGE DOWN keys on your keyboard, or to clicking above or below the scroll bar.

- Some programs may limit the maximum number of lines that you can scroll with each notch of the wheel.

- If your mouse does not have a mouse wheel, the Wheel tab may not appear.
