Clean The Inside Of You Computer!

Over time, the components inside a computer can become covered with dust. This dust can cause problems with the contacts on the motherboard and its peripherals. Take the cover off the system every three months and use a can of compressed air to blow the dust off of everything inside.

2. Click Customize.

3. Click the Advanced tab.

4. Under Recent documents, click Clear List, click OK, and then click OK. Your most recently used documents are removed from the My Recent Documents folder. Note that this action does not delete the documents from your hard disk.

Keep The Core System In RAM With Windows XP!

Windows XP takes portions of the operating system, applications, and data files that aren't currently needed in RAM and temporarily stores the data on the hard disk in the paging file. During a normal computing session, Windows regularly moves data back and forth from RAM and the paging file.

If you have a considerable amount of RAM in your system--512 MB or more--you can improve system performance by preventing the OS from sending user-mode and kernel-mode drivers, as well as kernel-mode system code, to the paging file.

You can do so by changing a setting in the registry. Here's how:

1. Launch the Registry Editor (Regedit.exe).

I don't publish the actual hacks in my newsletters! You can get this one at my Customer Support Site! This is a Free Site that I am combining several sites to. All that you have to do is register if you haven't already!

5. Close the Registry Editor.

You may need to restart the system or log out of Windows XP for the change to take effect.

Note: Editing the registry is risky, so be sure you have a verified backup before making any changes.

Troubleshooting The Windows 98 Boot Process With Bootlog.txt!

Troubleshooting Windows 98 boot up problems can be time-consuming at best, and in previous sessions, we have discussed tools such as the Microsoft Configuration utility (msconfig), which can help clean boot our systems.

However, if you just want to have an idea of which individual Windows files are failing at startup, you could try logging the startup process. As Windows starts, press the F8 key to bring up the Start Up menu and select the Logged option. This creates a file named Bootlog.txt in the root of the drive where Windows is installed. You will see a list of each file that is loaded together with an indicator of whether the file was loaded successfully.

For example, if you saw

LoadFailed = ndis.vxd in the log file, you would know that Ndis.vxd had not started. Thus, you would want to make this file the target of your searches into the Microsoft Knowledge Base, or (in this case) look at the networking components of Windows to see if the problem lies there.
