1. Bring Off-Screen Window Back Onto Screen.

While using Windows XP, I had a window that had somehow fallen completely off of my screen. Right-clicking the window in the Taskbar and selecting Maximize brought it back, but there was no way I could get the window restored to where I could move it around my screen with my mouse.

I had to do a little research on this one because it doesnít happen that often.

You just right-click the item in the task-bar and select Move. Then use the arrow keys on your keyboard to move it around. Once you press one of the arrow keys though, your mouse can take it over and you can then easily drag and drop the window back to the screen.

Sometimes the little things escape me. I wouldíve probably never thought of these steps. I mean, who ever uses the Move option?

2. Find Current System Uptime in XP.

How to find how long a Windows XP system has been running since the last restart or shut down.

Note: This works for Windows XP Professional.

1. Click Start > Run.

2. Type cmd and click OK.

3. Type systeminfo and press the Enter key.

4. Scroll back toward the top of the screen and look on the line that says System Up Time.

3. In Windows XP or Windows Vista, the My Documents folder is missing from the My Computer view.

To fix this problem try the following steps:

1. Hold down the Windows key and press R.

2. Type regedit and click OK.

3. Click the plus sign next to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
then Software
then
Microsoft
then Windows
then CurrentVersion
then Explorer

4. Right click on the DocFolderPaths entry and click New > String Value.

5. Give the string value the username you use to login to Windows.

6. Set the Value data to the path to where the My Documents folder belongs. It would be C:\Documents and Settings\username\My Documents. Click OK.

4. When you open a file in Windows XP that has a corrupted video, image files, HTML pages, or MP3 file, Windows Explorer crashes.

You will need to somehow access this folder so that you can delete the offensive file. You will need to unregister 2 DLLís to prevent the Windows from previewing the file, which is what is actually causing Windows Explorer to crash.

1. Click Start > Run and type regsvr32 /u shimgvw.dll and click OK.

2. Click Start > Run and type regsvr32 /u shmedia.dll and click OK.

3. Delete the file that is corrupted.

4. Click Start > Run and type regsvr32 shimgvw.dll and click OK.

5. Click Start > Run and type regsvr32 shmedia.dll and click OK.

5. Remote Tab Missing From System Properties in XP.

There can be a problem with the Remote tab missing from System Properties screen when you right-click on My Computer and go to Properties.

To solve this problem try the following:

1. Click Start > Run.

2. Type regsvr32 remotepg.dll

3. Click OK, then OK when the dialog appears.

Now give it a try. The Remote tab should now appear.

6. When viewing Folder Options in Windows XP, the General and View tabs are missing.

To try to fix this problem, try the following steps:

1. Click Start > Run, type regsvr32 browseui.dll and click OK

2. Click Start > Run, type regsvr32 shell32.dll and click OK.

Check to see if that worked. If not, continue with the following steps:

3. Go to Start > Run, type msconfig and click OK.

4. Click the Expand File button.

5. Type browseui.dll in the File to Restore field.

6. In the Restore From filed, enter the path to your XP CD or the I386 folder on the C drive (if present).

7. In the Restore To field, type C:\Windows\System32

8. Repeat steps 5 through 7 but restore the shell32.dll file instead.

Repeat steps 1 and 2 and hopefully you will be able to see the General and View tabs now.

7. XP/Vista Error: STOP: c0000218 {Registry File Failure}

When installing Windows XP or Windows Vista. You get a blue screen of death error:

STOP: c0000218 {Registry File Failure}

The most likely cause of this is the hard drive is damaged and must be repaired. CHKDSK /R will need to be run to try to repair it. To do so, try the following steps:

1. Boot the computer with your Windows installation disc.

2. When you are prompted to select Repair or Recover, press R.

3. Type the Administrator password when prompted.

4. At the command prompt, type CHKDSK /R, and then press Enter.

5. Read the results, and then take any steps that you must take to complete the process. You may need to run CHKDSK /F instead to fix the problem.

6. Restart the computer, and see if Windows works now.

If this didnít fix the problem, you may have to replace the hard drive.

8. Internet Explorer Text is Too Large or Too Small

In Internet Explorer, the letters appear too big or too small.

IE has a feature that increases or decreases the size of your fonts. You can make adjustments by clicking View > Text Size.

A shortcut would also be to hold down the CTRL key on your keyboard while using the scroll wheel on your mouse. You can also hold down CTRL and press + to increase the size or - to decrease the size of the letters.

9. When you try to access an FTP site using Internet Explorer, you get an error.

Page cannot be displayed

There are a couple of things that commonly cause this. The first is that FTP access or port 21 is blocked on your firewall. If that is not the case, try the following:

1. In Internet Explorer, click Tools > Internet Options.

2. Click the Advanced tab.

3. Under Browsing and check box Enable folder view for FTP sites.

4. Click OK.

5. Close and restart Internet Explorer.

10. Enable/Disable Sounds on Web Sites in Internet Explorer 7

Sometimes sounds that suddenly play on a web page can be annoying, especially on a work computer. Here is how to disable sounds in Internet Explorer.

1. Hold down the Windows key and press R (Or click Start > Run).

2. Type regedit and click OK.

3. Click the plus sign next to HKEY_CURRENT_USER
then Software
then Microsoft
then Internet Explorer
then click
Main

4. Look for an entry on the right side for Play_Background_Sounds. Double-click the entry and change the value to no to disable sounds. Set it back to yes to if you wish to enable sounds again.

11. Enable/Disable Content Advisor in Internet Explorer 7

1. In Internet Explorer, click Tools > Internet Options.

2. Click the Content tab.

3. Click Enable.. to turn Content Advisor on. Jump to step 4.
Click DisableÖ and enter the password if you wish do turn Content Advisor off. Ignore all following steps.

4. On the Ratings tab of the Content Advisor dialog box, click one of the categories, and then move the slider to use one of the following: None, Limited, or Unrestricted.

5. Repeat Step 4 for additional categories if you wish to add more.

6. Click the Approved Sites tab and enter the name of a specific site that you want to control access to. Then click Always or Never.

ē Always allows users to view the site, even if itís not in the Content Advisor screening level youíve set.
ē Never means that nobody can visit the site even if itís acceptable to Content Advisor.

7. When done, click OK, then OK again.

12. Delete My Music, My Documents, My Pictures Folders Forever

Do you delete the My Music, My Documents or My Pictures folders only to find they have returned to Windows later? Delete them forever with these steps.

1. Hold down the Windows Key and press R.

2. Type regsvr32 /u mydocs.dll and click OK.

3. Now try deleting the folders. They should stay gone as long as that DLL isnít registered again.

Please be aware that many applications may use these folders. Removing them may cause problems.

To undo this change, use the command regsvr32 mydocs.dll.

13. Disable CTRL+ALT+Delete Unlock Prompt After Wakeup in Vista.

You might be tired of having to hit CTRL+ALT+Delete and login with your username and password every time Windows Vista decides to hibernate or go to sleep. You can disable it from prompting you for this information though.

1. Open Control Panel > System and Maintenance > Power Options.

2. Click Change plan settings for the plan that is selected.

3. Click the Change advanced power settings link.

4. Click Change settings that are not currently available.

5. Under the Power Options and Advanced Settings tab, click the plus sign next to Additional settings.

6. Click the plus sign next to Request a password on wakeup.

7. Change the value to No for On battery and/or Plugged in.

8. Click OK.

14. Enable/Disable Network Icon in Notification Area in Vista.

How to enable or disable the Network icon in the Notification Area or Systray in Windows Vista.

1. Right-click on a blank area of the Taskbar.

2. Click Properties.

3. Click the Notification Area tab.

4. Under System Icons, put a check in the box for Network to enable the network icon in the Systray or uncheck it to disable it.

5. Click OK.

15. Enable/Disable Laptop Power Icon in Notification Area in Vista

How to enable or disable the power icon in the Notification Area or Systray in Windows Vista.

1. Right-click on a blank area of the Taskbar.

2. Click Properties.

3. Click the Notification Area tab.

4. Under System Icons, put a check in the box for Power to enable the power icon in the Systray or uncheck it to disable it.

5. Click OK.
