Q. Will Programs Stop Working After A Defrag.

When I do disk defrag. Is there anything in it that will stop programs from working? Will i loose any data?

A.  A defrag should not cause any loss of data and all your programs should still work after doing it.

When you do a defrag, make sure that you have as few programs as possible running.  This isn't to prevent data loss, but rather to allow the defrag program to defrag as much of the disk as possible.  It cannot defrag a section of disk, if the program residing on that section is currently running.

One other thing I might add and that is to reboot your computer in to Safe Mode when doing a Defrag Operation.  The whole process works better and faster when done in Safe Mode because there is not many programs writing to the drive in Safe Mode.
