Q.  I am new to XP down by the clock i have an arrow "show hidden icons" or "hide" how do i set this to show them all the time? and also coming from Windows ME I had another short cut section on the task bar next to the START button can i set this up on XP also? and if so how?

A.  I believe the answer to both of these questions is in the same place.  Click on the Start button and select the "Control Panel" option.  Open the "Taskbar and Start Menu" utility and make sure that you are on the Taskbar tab.  To keep the System Tray icons (i.e. the icons in the box with the clock) from hiding, uncheck the "Hide inactive icons" option.

I believe that what you mean when you talk about the "short cut section on the task bar next to the START button" is what is called the Quick Launch bar.  You can show this bar by checking the "Show Quick Launch" option.

Click the Apply button and confirm that both options produce the desired results.  If the Quick Launch bar is on the wrong side of the taskbar, you can drag it to the desired location.  If it does not move, confirm that the "Lock the taskbar" option is unchecked (click Apply again, if you have to uncheck it).  I suggest that once the Quick Launch bar is in the desired location and the taskbar is the desired size (did you know that you can drag the taskbar up to a different size?) that you lock the taskbar with the aforementioned option.  Finish by clicking the OK button.
