Q.
I have a raft of KB files residing in my Window folder. What are these files and
can I get rid of them?
A.
I believe that the files you are talking about are the backups of the various
updates applied to
Windows. These are placed there after you do a Windows
Update or a Windows Update is done automatically They are used to be able to
uninstall the update, in case there is any problem that comes from applying the
update.
After the update has been on your system for a while, it would be safe to remove
them because you would know that the update did not cause any problem. However,
each update has more than just the files you are seeing to remove from the
system, so it would be better to use a utility to remove the updates, instead of
doing it manually. You can download such a utility at "http://www.dougknox.com/xp/utils/xp_hotfix_backup.htm".
Remove them using this utility and most, if not all, of the files should be
gone. If you still have too many files, let me know exactly where the files are
in the
Windows directory and what they are named.
Let me know if you need anything else.
