Q.
I have a question I hope that someone can help me with....I just recently bought
a laptop, and I don’t really know much about computers so I thought that with a
laptop I could go on the internet anywhere that I'm at and not have to plug
anything in (like dial up), but now I see that is not the case, so I’m confused,
I thought laptops were supposed to be wireless. Is there something that I need
to do or get to be able to connect to the internet without having to dial up?
and I want to be able to take my laptop with me to Europe when I go on vacation
this summer, would I be able to do that and how would I get an internet
connection?
A.
There are cellular modems available for laptops, but going overseas would make
that option very cost ineffective. I believe that probably your best option is
to get a wireless network card (often called a Wi-Fi card) for your laptop. You
can ask any computer store if they carry Wi-Fi cards for laptops and have them
give you a recommendation on which one to buy.
Once you get overseas, you will then need to look for coffee shops, internet
cafes, hotels, etc. that claim to have Wi-Fi internet access or wireless
internet access. I have not been overseas, so I do not know how common they are
over there, but in many of the US's big cities, they are all over the place.
Perhaps a travel agent would have a little more information regarding the
availability of Wi-Fi overseas.
If there
are any other overseas travelers out there that can add to this tip let me know
and I will make sure you information is published.
Let me know if you need anything else.
