Q.  I have a problem with my son's computer that I hope somebody can help me with. It is a Compaq with Windows XP SP2. It sometimes runs very slowly and the cooling fan runs quite loudly. Other times it runs and sounds normal. I used msconfig to turn off the programs that I didn't need running and am constantly running virus and antispyware software. I also use Cleanup! regularly.

A.  The loud cooling fan needs to be checked out as an overheating computer will ramp down in speed to compensate.

You need to shutdown, open the case, blow out any accumulated dust, then restart and have a gander and a listen to the fan. Fans can often be cleaned and given a very tiny bit of lube.

You might also want to monitor temps using Speedfan.

Generally anything over 70 C is suspect -- or any rise of more than 25 C from a cold boot.
