Q.  I've recently gone from one to 2 home PCs (after the old one blew up) and have a wireless broadband router which manages to connect both PCs to the internet but doesn't seem to want to connect the PCs to each other.

The system set up is as follows:
Broadband/wireless router = Dlink DSL-2640B.
PC A is connected to the router via a 100Mb Ethernet connection
PC B is connected to the router via a wireless connection.
Both PCs are running Windows
Vista Home Ultimate.

The PC came with Norton Protection Centre.

As I've said, both PCs talk to the internet fine, but they don't seem to recognize that each other exists (the pretty little diagram you get from vista for instance includes only the router).

I take it I have done something silly and/or I'm missing something obvious - any help would be gratefully received.

A.  Personally the first thing I would do is to either disable or uninstall Norton. More than likely a mis-configured Norton is the issue. Have you checked the Norton support pages for configuration info?

Firewall mis-configuration is a big issue with file & print sharing.  Can you ping one PC from the other and vice versa?

If you want to use your Norton 360 follow these directions.

To Configure Norton 360 for use with a home network.

1. Start Norton 360.

2. Click Task and Settings.

3. Click Change Advanced Settings.

4. Click Firewall Protection Settings.

5. Click Network Location.

6. If your network gateway address is under Limited location, select it and click the left-arrow button to move it to Trusted location.

7. Click Apply.

8. Click Close.
