Q.  I have a new PC with Vista installed and am having a few problems with networking it.  Is it easy to set up a network between XP and Vista?

A.  Yes, but there are a few differences between the two:

In XP, the default workgroup name is: MSHOME
In Vista, the default workgroup name is: WORKGROUP

Make sure that both XP and Vista's workgroup names are the same.

In XP, the default shared folders name is: Shared Docs
In Vista, the default shared folders name is: Public

Copy and paste between the two is a simple task.

To configure properly:

1. In Vista, go to Start>> Control Panel>> Network and Internet>> Network and Sharing Centre
2. Make the following settings changes:

A. Network Discovery set to ON

B. File Sharing is set to ON

C. Public Folder Sharing is set to ON

D. Password Protected Sharing is set to OFF

Many have reported not being able to connect with Norton 360 installed on their systems. I have also seen this and have a work around for it which will be in a future newsletter.  Be sure to disable Norton's firewall and turn the Windows firewall on instead.
