Q. Is it possible and if so how do I enable Windows 2000-like file sharing and security in Windows XP workgroups? I don't see the security tab for a file or a folder

A.  You have to change a network access setting in the local policy settings.

1. Start the Microsoft Management Console Local Security Policy snap-in by clicking Start, Control Panel, Administrative tools, Local security policy.

2. Double Click local policies.

3. Click security options.

4. Double-click the policy "Network access: Force network logons using local accounts to authenticate as Guest."

5. Check disabled, and Click OK.

6. Close the console.

7. Reboot the system, to make the change to take effect.

Now you have share permissions and file security on NTFS volumes with Windows XP. On FAT volumes, the Security menu will still remain unavailable.
