Q.  Is it safer to have Automatic Updates "download and notify" and wait to see if anyone posts a problem before installing?

This is a general question about Windows Automatic Updates (no urgency for a reply). There have been times when it has been nice to have updates download and install, but there are also times when this feature has caused havoc, wasting a lot of time trying to fix something that doesn't work after the updates/installations. Therefore, is it safer (meaning less aggravation and wasted time) to have AU "download and notify" and wait to see if anyone posts a problem before installing?

A.  With the work I do here I let Automatic Updates download and update on two PCs automatically (XP and Vista) while I never do on the PC I work with every day.  The reason I do this is the same reason you ask.

That is I wait for the problems that show up with some of Microsoft's updates.  It is hard to recommend this to others though because some updates plug up Security Holes in the Microsoft Operating Systems.

I guess I would tell you that you are correct in waiting but you are also at risk if you are delaying a possible security fix.

It is important to note that there is never one fix for a question.  What may work for one person might not for the next.  Depending on the problem and the way it is described by the Computer Owner there may be Six different approaches to a positive outcome.  If the first answer I give you to your question doesn’t work let me know and I will send you another.  Just give me details.

Let me know if you need anything else.
