Mute Your Modem in Windows 98

Go to Start, Settings, Control Panel, and choose Modems. 

Select your modem in the upper box and then click Properties. Click the Connection tab and then the Advanced button. 

In the Extra Settings box, type; ATM0 

Note: The last character is a zero, not the letter "O." This modem string setting instructs your modem to remain quiet during the dialing process. 

Click OK twice and then Close to exit.
